Optus E160E mobile broadband works

I was desperate, wanted a 3G modem for learning about how mode-switching works in Puppy.

My Vodafone USB mobile broadband unit was left with a relative in Perth, so this morning I drove to Perth (4 hours).

Then I decided to purchase another unit. This time I bought an Optus modem for $69, which is a Huawei E160E device.

But then I discovered that it is not supported by usb_modeswitch. Which is good, I had to do some deeper investigation. Now it works!

Using it now.

This is where I found out how to do it:

Dialup modem disconnect
Regarding your previous blog post with one dialup modem which disconnects shortly after connection, I had that problem some years back with a particular ISP. The solution was to create a valid /etc/ppp/pap-secrets file, consisting of -
<username> * <password>
Don't forget the asterisk, it won't work without it.
Obviously, my dialup provider was using password authentication protocol, PAP. But other ISP's might use the alternative authentication method, CHAP, for which you would probably need to have a valid /etc/ppp/chap-secrets file. I suspect the contents of this file are the same format as pap-secrets.
